Thank you so much for getting up so early in the morning discuss these in this very interesting question of artificial intelligence which I’m convinced will become the most powerful technology that we have ever had, and I want to talk about how we can make sure that this becomes the best thing, rather than the worst thing ever to happen to humanity.
So, first of all I want to say that I'm a little bit extra excited to be talking with you today, because many of my best students here at MIT are 中国学生 as you can see from these pictures, and that's also why I'm so motivated to try to learn a few more words of 中文.
I want to encourage you to think big, really big. So let's remind ourselves that here we are 13.8 billion years after our big bang. Our universe has woken up in the sense that, on this small blue planet. A small part of our universe has become conscious and started to look out the telescopes around it, and this we've discovered something humbling. We've discovered that our universe is vastly larger than we thought and that we had greatly underestimated the size of things. And we're also realizing that we have underestimated our own potential to understand this universe through science and through technology.
I feel, for not just for rockets, but for all the technology that we build if we want to make something good with our future it's not enough to make our technology powerful, we also have to figure out how to steer it and where we want to go with it. I want to talk today about all three: the power, the steering and the destination, but not just for rockets. For the most powerful technology that we humans will ever build, for artificial intelligence – its power, how we can steer it, and what we would ultimately like to do with it.
